O Rio Amazonas, com seis mil novecentos e oitenta e dois kilometros de comprimento, é o maior rio do mundo,
conforme alguns estudos. É, de longe, o rio com maior fluxo de água por vazão.

A Amazônia, que tem a maior bacia hidrográfica do mundo, com mais de sete milhões de quilómetros quadrados,
é responsável por cerca de um quinto do fluxo fluvial total do mundo, sendo que a água que flui pelos rios amazônicos,
equivale a vinte porcento da água doce líquida da Terra.

O Rio Amazonas tem sua origem na nascente do rio Apurímac, no sul do Peru, e deságua no oceano Atlântico junto ao rio
Tocantins no Delta do Amazonas, no norte brasileiro. Ele entra no território brasileiro com o nome de rio Solimões e finalmente,
em Manaus, após a junção com o rio Negro, recebo o nome de Rio Amazonas.

Sua foz é classificada como mista, por apresentar uma foz em estuário e em delta entre os estados do Pará e Amapá,
com até trezentos kilometros de largura.

No território brasileiro o rio Amazonas percorre uma região bastante plana, com uma média de apenas dois centímetros de queda
por kilômetro, resultando em cerca de vinte mil kilômetros de percurso navegável.

Os peixes da bacia Amazônica se destacam pelo elevado número de espécies, constituindo a principal fonte de alimentação,
trabalho, lazer e renda da população local. Principais peixes, o pirarucu, tambaqui, aruanã, tucunaré, matrinchan e muitos outros.

Destaca-se também o peixe-boi-da-Amazônia um grande mamífero, que se encontra com ameaça de extinção.

No ano de mil e quinhentos, o explorador espanhol Vicente Yáñez Pinzón e a tripulação liderada por ele foram os primeiros
europeus a navegar no rio. Pinzón chamou o rio de Rio Santa Maria del Mar Dulce, o que posteriormente foi reduzido para
Mar Dulce, devido à quantidade de água doce.
